DME – potentially a viable clean-burning alternative fuel for China
DME, a chemical derivative of methanol, is a clean-burning alternative to LPG and
diesel and has among the lowest emissions of carbon dioxide and particles. Given
the abundance of coal in China and relative competitiveness of coal-based DME,
the government seems to reckon that developing DME is a viable part of its
energy strategy. However, given the constraints from capital costs, water
resources and infrastructure, the large-scale use of DME in China may still take
three to five years.
