China’s Beer Industry
Abstract
This survey of the China brewery sector began in 1999 and has been used as an internal reference document to study the development and future of the industry. At the time the survey was started it was believed that the beer industry in China would be undergoing structural changes for 3-5 years.
In 1999, beer companies were mainly localized businesses. Recently, the larger companies have expanded into new markets and competition is increasing, although not as much as was originally expected. This upheaval in the beer industry offers opportunities for China investors to buy companies or form alliances with ones wishing to expand operations.

I. Global Characteristics & Development Trends of Brewery Sector
1 Overview
Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage worldwide and global beer production has grown steadily in recent years. Beer production in major beer-producing countries reached 163.5 billion liters in 2000, an increase of 0.8% from 1999. The United States is the world’s largest beer producer (production was 27.7 billion liters in 2000) followed by China, Germany, Brazil and Japan.
